Changing or emptying your ostomy pouch in public can be a daunting task. Here are some tips to help that process be easy and discreet.

  • Try a moldable skin barrier so you can avoid prepping or cutting your supplies in a public restroom for a quicker pouch change. Learn more and request samples here.
  • Always carry extra supplies in case you are stranded where supplies may not be available. Consider using a supplies bag that can hang on the back of a stall door for easy access to your supplies during the pouch change or emptying.
  • Create a buffer with a layer of toilet paper in the toilet bowl to avoid splashing when emptying your pouch.
  • Find the restrooms as you travel, shop or move through your community. Reduce your stress by being familiar with the location of the nearest restroom should you need it quickly.
  • Download the Traveler’s Communication Card to help communicate when you urgently need access to a restroom. Download here.
